YVR Art Installation - Sea to Sky
STEVE SMITH 2009
Drums, in First Nations culture, are used for ceremonial occasions. Guests are welcomed to an event with drums, and are drummed out as the event closes. This installation acknowledges that tradition, by silently drumming the arrival and departure of travelers that pass by them daily.
I have made reference to YVR’s theme, land, sea and sky, by including creatures from all three realms. The lower drums contain animals of the sea, such as Killer Whale, Salmon and Octopus. As the drums ascend skyward, the designs change to reflect land creatures such as the Bear and Wolf, and then finally creatures of the sky world, represented by Eagle and Raven.
This installation is in the new Pier C expansion in the Domestic Terminal.
